Why We Started The Global Academic
We are so excited to launch The Global Academic. It’s been a long time coming! After years of talking about creating a business to support students succeed in college, the stars finally aligned… and we made it happen.
As professors at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), we work with undergraduate students every day. We meet them in our lectures, seminars, and research labs. It’s fun, and we love working with them!
But we also see those same students face unique, and sometimes predictable, academic and social challenges. Many stem from being away from home, often for the first time: independently balancing the demands of college with life and work, building a new social network, and developing a sense of belonging. Other challenges come from unfamiliar academic expectations: More rigorous coursework, much larger lecture courses, and the need for doing (much) more independent work outside of the classroom.
Students often don’t have a full understanding that college success takes more than just going to classes and getting good grades. Many students miss out on crucial opportunities, because they don’t fully grasp their importance. Whether this is the freshman student who, after receiving a poor grade on their paper, finds out that their campus offers peer writing support, or the graduating senior who has never worked directly with a professor or even been to office hours, but now needs a letter of recommendation for graduate school – these situations have one thing in common: Students have missed out on essential academic and professional development experiences. There are in almost all cases predictable and avoidable. But it is never too late to learn!
Of course, we help our students as professors. But when there are hundreds of students, there is only so much we can do with the limited time we have. We explain class assignments and support students in understanding course materials. We don’t have time to teach students how to do college, that is, how to navigate the system and take advantage of opportunities not directly related to our courses. That’s been a sticking point in our careers. Why? Because we know that the right support makes the difference between a student who does ok and a student who excels. We always wanted to work with students directly, to share strategies for success, and then work with them on the most important step - actually implementing those strategies successfully.
And so – we Created The Global Academic!
We finally did it. Now we get to do what we are so passionate about. To provide students with the time and individualized support that will make a real difference, academically and socially.
