Coaching for International Students
Coaching for International Students
How can international students benefit from individual coaching?
Individualized support guides international students to adjust to the US academic system, to align their study skills with expectations, and to further develop critical thinking skills beyond what universities already offer. We also support students in learning to network with American students.
How do international students benefit from additional guidance?
International students face challenges that domestic students do not encounter to the same degree. Why? Because they enter a new academic system - one that plays by different rules.
While some of these differences are obvious, others are not - with consequences for student success. For example:
How much of your work will be structured and guided versus done independently?
What is the hierarchy between a professor and their students? How should you interact with the professor? Would you know what to do if you disagreed with them? Would you know how to properly express yourself?
What is the best strategy for note taking?
How do you best prepare for testing - does your approach need to be adjusted?
How do you manage your time?
Should you share your opinions openly in class discussions?
To grow as scholars in the US academic system, international students are challenged to expand their critical thinking skills to include assumptions made in your new environment.
Why should international students work on connecting with American students?
The number one concern we hear from international students is that while they easily make connections with other international students, they struggle more to make friends with American students.
Sometimes language barriers hold back international students, but often students are hindered by cultural barriers. Would you know what to do if invited to an American's birthday party? What should you do if your Professor brings snacks to class? Can you make a phone call with ease?
How often will students meet with a coach and what type of activities will we do?
Coaches and students will meet weekly online.
Initial meetings will focus on individualized guidance to set up students for success in the US educational system.
Students will complete activities related to time-management, study skills, test taking strategies and networking with professors and teaching assistants.
Students will also engage in activities designed to create meaningful connections with American students.
The curriculum will be tailored to the individual student's needs.
Why would parents want their students to work with a coach?
Parents of international students often worry about student success and well-being, and what they get out of their own investment.
Our coaching program offers support for your student navigating the unknown US academic landscape with an emphasis on academic and career prospects connected with peace of mind within the university system.
